New coloring technique

Description

I'm sure many artists around here know how to do this coloring. First you start with a layer of yellow, then a soft one of orange, then finish it off with burnt ocre for the skin..

Anyway, I never knew about this 'till last night when I was flippin' through a drawing book we got from the library. It looked really awesome ^^ So I gave it a go.
But gosh, it takes so long! And it didn't turn out so great....
The skin's actually pretty okay if you step back and look at it. I'm actually kinda proud.. ^_^
The hair's a little sloppy, but I was tired. =o=
her shirt and boots are what gets me. I tried blue for lighting, instead of grey or white. I'm not too sure on the results. ^^;
And her skirt is kinda plain, but I couldn't think of a good vibrant color to start with for pink. I did red shading, which looks okay, though.

hm...feedback? Should I keep trying at this style? I'd love to know~
